Copper Pipe Sizing Guide: From 1/2 Inch to 4 Inch
Undersize a water line and fixtures starve; oversize it and you have wasted money and slowed your hot-water delivery. Sizing copper correctly is one of the highest-leverage decisions on any plumbing job. This guide walks the common sizes from 1/2" to 4", explains the numbers that confuse people, and gives you field rules of thumb you can actually use.
Nominal size is not the real diameter
The single biggest source of confusion: copper is sold by nominal size, which is close to the inside diameter, not the outside. The actual outside diameter (OD) is always 1/8" larger than the nominal label.

Type K, L, and M: same OD, different walls
For a given nominal size, Type K, L, and M all share the same OD โ so the same fittings fit all three. What changes is wall thickness and pressure rating:
- Type K โ thickest wall. Underground, water service, and high-pressure work.
- Type L โ medium wall. The go-to for commercial interior supply and anything you want extra margin on.
- Type M โ thinnest wall. Common, code-approved for residential supply in most jurisdictions, and the most economical.

How to actually size a line
Real sizing uses fixture units and a pressure-loss calculation, but here are the field rules of thumb most residential and light-commercial work lands on:
- 1/2": a single fixture โ a sink, toilet, or hose bib drop. Do not run a whole bathroom off it.
- 3/4": the residential workhorse. Branch feeding a couple of fixtures, or the main into a small home.
- 1": main supply for a larger or multi-bath home, or a branch serving many fixtures.
- 1-1/4" to 1-1/2": commercial mains, apartment risers, anything moving real volume.
- 2"โ4": building mains, fire-protection feeds, and process water.
The numbers behind the rules
Three factors drive proper sizing:
- Fixture units (FU) โ each fixture adds demand; a line must carry the sum of everything downstream.
- Velocity โ keep cold water under about 8 ft/s and hot under about 5 ft/s. Faster than that and you get noise, erosion, and premature pinhole failures.
- Pressure loss โ friction grows fast as pipe gets smaller and runs get longer. A long run often needs the next size up even if the FU count alone would allow smaller.
Common sizing mistakes
- Trunk-and-branch starvation: running too small a main, so the last fixture loses pressure when others open. Size the trunk for total downstream demand.
- Oversizing hot lines: a too-big hot line stores more cooling water in the pipe, so you wait longer at the tap. Right-size, do not just up-size.
- Mixing nominal and OD when ordering: always order by nominal size and Type.
