How to Sweat a Copper Joint: Step-by-Step
Soldering — "sweating" — copper is one of those skills that looks like magic until you do it, and then it is second nature. The whole trick is preparation: a clean, properly fluxed, correctly heated joint will pull solder in by capillary action and seal tight. A sloppy one leaks no matter how much solder you pile on. Here is the method that works every time.
What you need
- Tubing cutter (not a hacksaw — you want a square, clean cut)
- Emery cloth or a fitting brush, plus an inside reaming tool
- Lead-free water-soluble flux for potable lines
- Lead-free solder (95/5 tin-antimony or similar)
- Propane or MAPP torch
- Flux brush, damp rag, and a heat shield if you are near framing
Step 1 — Cut square and ream
Cut the pipe with a tubing cutter, rotating and tightening a little each turn. Then ream the burr off the inside edge. That burr restricts flow and causes turbulence and erosion right at the joint — do not skip it.
Step 2 — Clean both surfaces to bright copper
This is where most leaks are won or lost. Use emery cloth on the pipe end and a fitting brush inside the cup until both are bright, shiny copper — no dull spots, no oxidation. Solder will not bond to a tarnished surface. Once cleaned, do not touch the bare copper with your fingers; oils interfere with the bond.
Step 3 — Flux evenly
Brush a thin, even coat of flux on the pipe end and inside the fitting cup. Flux chemically cleans as it heats and pulls solder into the joint. Thin and even — globs of flux just burn and leave residue. Assemble the joint and give it a slight twist to spread the flux.
Step 4 — Heat the fitting, not the solder
Light the torch and heat the fitting, not the pipe and not the solder. You are heating the joint so that the copper itself melts the solder. Move the flame around the fitting to spread the heat evenly. On 1/2" and 3/4" this takes only seconds with MAPP gas.
How to know it is ready
Touch the solder to the joint away from the flame. When the copper is hot enough, the solder melts on contact and gets drawn into the gap. If you have to hold solder in the flame to melt it, the joint is not hot enough yet.
Step 5 — Feed solder around the joint
Pull the flame back slightly and touch solder to the seam, working it around the full circumference. Capillary action draws it in, even upward. A correctly sized joint takes roughly its diameter in solder length — about 1/2" of solder for a 1/2" joint. You will see a clean silver ring all the way around. Do not overfeed.
Step 6 — Wipe and cool
Wipe the joint with a damp rag to clean off excess flux and leave a neat finish (careful — it is hot). Let it cool naturally; do not quench it, which can crack the joint. Once cool, pressure-test before you close up the wall.
Common mistakes that cause leaks
- Not cleaning to bright copper — the number-one cause of pinhole leaks.
- Soldering a wet line — even a trickle of water steals the heat so the joint never reaches solder temperature. Stuff the line with bread or use a pipe plug to hold water back.
- Overheating — scorched, black flux means you cooked it; the joint will not draw solder. Re-clean and start over.
- Using too much solder — drips inside the pipe restrict flow and can break loose later.
